You will be expected by a dream of a white sand beach where you can walk for miles and collect a variety of beautiful shells or enjoy swimming in the shallow warm emerald waters. Celestun is an ideal vacation spot with excellent seafood restaurants by the beach but avoid crowds and noise. Here you find the only entry point to the "Parque Natural Ria Celestun", a 100,000-acre wildlife reserve with extensive mangrove forests, salt flats, and one of the largest colonies of flamingos in North America.

The Place:

Celestun means "painted stone" and is a tranquil fishing village at Mexico's Gulf Coast.

For foodstuff, the town market and several corner stores carry everything you need. A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh fish and seafood are available daily as well as freshly baked breads and pastries.

The closest airports in the area are the Manuel Crecencio Rejon International Airport (MID) located about 48 miles (77 km) east of Celestun in Merida and the Campeche Airport (CPE) located approximately 71 miles (114 km) south of Celestun in Campeche.

A number of tourists are taking advantage of the many cheap flights to Cancun. There is a great luxury bus from Cancun to Mérida which takes four hours and costs about US $25 one way.
